2022 Means an opportunity to set new goals for yourself. Keeping a clean house is an easy goal to set. Here are 12 ways to help you reach your New Year’s Resolution of keeping a clean house year around.
Start the year out by decluttering a room. Select a room used the most to tackle first, your kitchen or bedroom will probably be at the top of your list. Ask yourself if you love the item or use it regularly. If you don’t, get rid of it by donating it or throwing it away.
Use It Before Purchasing More
With stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, people love to stock up on items. However, if you are trying to cut back on items don’t buy more until you run out. Use the last bit of toothpaste, mouth wash, or lotion. With this new habit you may discover that you are wasting less, consuming less, and bringing less clutter into your home.Clear It Off – Start with a flat surface in your home. A great place to begin could be your home office desk, coffee table, kitchen counter or nightstand. Having work surfaces cluttered with items takes away from the usage space. Clear your desk off so that you have a clean area to work and accomplish any task.
We all have a chair or corner of the room that catches clothes as you take them off or change what you are wearing. Every night before you go to bed make sure you put them away and have a clean space in the morning. You may also want to take an extra 30 seconds and fold or hang your clothes up neatly in the closet.
Throw it away. Clutter is often stuff that needs to be thrown away and we delay it. When you bring in shopping bags, boxes, junk mail and flyers throw them away in the moment and keep the area clean.
Give It a Home
Every new item that is brought into the house should be given a permanent home. Nothing is wrong with buying new things as long as it doesn’t clutter the house. The junk drawer or storage closet doesn’t count.
Storage bins are a great tool but can also enable you to hold on to more stuff than you need to. Identify exactly what you need to store before you buy storage bins.
Take 5 minutes before you go to bed to tidy up different areas of the house, ie. taking out the trash, cleaning mirrors, or doing dishes. You might find that you can accomplish this in the same amount of time that it takes you to scroll through social media.
Make a List
If you have an area of the house that is driving you crazy with clutter, make a list and write down a time to tackle it. Focus on the one area so you won’t get overwhelmed.
Before You Leave
Before you leave a room take a moment to tidy it up. Fold any blankets you got out and bring the dishes to the kitchen. Doing small things a little at a time can keep it looking nice.
One In – One Out Rule
If you are buying something new, take out something similar with it. Buying a new pair of shoes, donate your old ones.
Keeping a container for donations in an easy to reach area is great. As you come across items you want to donate throw them in the container so you don’t forget. When the container is full, take it to your charity of choice.
